DOGS ~ Judge ANN ARCH

I was pleased to find certain aspects of the breed noticeably improved since I last judged.

  • Not one bad mouth and only one that I’d call weak in underjaw.
  • Quite a few good shaped eyes, though some lose expression due to being too round and prominent.
  • There were a few short, stuffy necks but not too many, when considering the number present.
  • Shoulders as in every breed, were somewhat varied. A few were really lacking angulation, but more were presenting an upright upper arm, which of course only allows restricted forward action. However, there were many with a classic shoulder, so necessary in a worker.
  • I think feet have improved and it was good to find many with strength in pastern as well.
  • Body formations varied, and in some I feel sure this will improve with greater maturity.
  • There were many with good couplings and strong loin, but a few were too long and it showed up on the move.
  • Hindquarters were better than last time and only a few were totally straight in stifle. It was good to find such excellent muscle in quite a good number. A few were tending to cow hock and turning feet outwards.
  • Jacket textures were generally very nice and could certainly keep out the wet.
  • Tail sets and carriage, as always, posed a problem. It may be the done thing to train dogs to carry tails low, but when animated the natural inclination is for them to rise for all to see! However, majority were of good length, with only couple that could have done with an extra inch or two!

I appreciated the good natured manner in which placings were accepted, and when possible I did mention why some were not quite so highly placed – sometimes carrying too much body weight and in others not enough. Another day can bring changes in placings, so I always try to let folks know of such very slight concerns, which, if heeded, may be helpful.
My thanks to everyone for a really enjoyable day, and with a good sized ring and helpful stewards, all made it a pleasure!

Minor Puppy Dog (6,1)
Class of promise with but two whose shoulders could have been a little better.
1st Gillespie & Harlow’s Bordertime Home James to Detania (NAF, TAF). Pleased for type and balance. Good head with nice dark eye, well placed forehand good feet. Body developing well with good rib and loin. Strong rear. Pleasing coat. Good easy movement, with nice tail carriage.
2nd Turner’s Locheil Black Label. Pushed winner hard and promises well for the future. Good overall construction. Nice head, eye and expression. Nice body. Can now come up on his feet a little more, but still moved easily and well.
3rd Tydeman & Harlow’s Bordertime He’s Fair Dinkum (NAF TAF). Promising, but very raw at present. Nice expression from his good dark eyes. Pleasing forehand. Body coming well. An easy mover but can settle a little more on hind action.

2nd Gillespie’s Detania Hillbilly Bell. Merle with good head and expression. Super forehand, body coming nicely. Very sound rear. At 9 months is still in very profuse puppy coat, which makes him appear much longer in body than he is! Moved soundly and well, RBPD.
3rd Randall’s Magreena The Barge Master. Very typical. Pleased on head and expression. Good shoulder placement and nice feet. Good body and sound rear. His great enthusiasm when moving gave some unsettled action, but could see sufficient to show he’s sound.

Somewhat disappointing class, with notable lack of depth, made for some serious consideration and re-examination.
